LIFE IS A GAME

About

Life is a game.

Lin Chien (b. 1984, Taipei, Taiwan) is a Taiwanese artist and graphic designer.

Working primarily with painting, collage, text, and mixed media, Lin creates vibrant visual narratives that merge bold colors, character-based imagery, Chinese calligraphy, and symbols of contemporary culture. Blending playfulness, humor, and everyday observations, his work explores cultural memory, emotional connections, and the relationship between people and daily life through the interplay of characters, symbols, and language.
In recent years, Lin has actively participated in exhibitions and international art exchanges. His works have been exhibited in Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Italy, and are held in private collections both in Taiwan and abroad. His ongoing practice explores the relationship between contemporary visual art and lived experience, using art as a platform for cross-cultural dialogue and connection.

Reinterpreting Eastern culture through a childlike perspective, and reimagining Zen through a contemporary visual language. This has become the central direction of my artistic practice.
Life is a game. I see life as a series of encounters, experiences, and choices—each like being dealt a different hand of cards. What truly matters is not the hand we receive, but how we choose to play it.
My inspiration comes from everyday life. People, animals, desserts, playing cards, popular culture, news stories, and even a single Zen phrase can all become part of my work. Through collage, rearrangement, and transformation, I weave fragments of daily life and cultural memory into visual narratives that exist somewhere between reality and imagination. This process has become my way of understanding and interpreting the world.
The recurring characters, white cat, and symbolic imagery in my work do not represent specific individuals. Instead, they serve as vessels for emotions, memories, and shared human experiences. Through playful and humorous imagery, I hope to encourage viewers to momentarily set aside preconceived ideas, rediscover everyday life with a simpler and more open perspective, and reconnect with the childlike curiosity that still exists within them.
Zen is another essential foundation of my practice. I often integrate Zen sayings and personal reflections into my compositions, not to offer definitive answers, but to leave space for contemplation and interpretation. Rather than explaining Zen directly, I seek to reinterpret its spirit through a contemporary visual language, allowing each viewer to discover their own meaning and emotional connection.
Chinese characters are another ongoing area of exploration in my work. To me, they are far more than a written language—they are visual forms rich with rhythm, emotion, and cultural memory. Each character possesses its own aesthetic presence as well as semantic meaning. I hope to let Chinese characters exist as freely as color, line, and collage, transforming them into a contemporary visual language rooted in Eastern culture.
For me, making art is both a way of seeing the world and an endless game of exploration. I hope my work offers more than visual delight—that beneath its humor and playfulness, it invites reflection and creates connections between childlike wonder, Zen philosophy, and shared cultural experiences.
If a single artwork can make someone pause for a moment, smile quietly, or rediscover the curiosity and sincerity they once had, then this creative journey has fulfilled its purpose.
